Dr. Satterwhite, or “Dr. Bill” as he is fondly called by many of his little patients, is a kind and compassionate lawyer-turned-pediatrician who listens to patient and family concerns and explains complex topics in clear, easy-to-understand ways. His skills are so sought after that some patients drive up to an hour to see him. He is kept humble, however, by his wife of 25 years who regularly reminds him that she would “never drive that far to go to a doctor, no matter who he is.”
While working as an attorney, he remembers feeling rushed during doctor visits with his children and having more questions he wanted answered. At the time, he wished there were a practical and concise resource designed for parents, not physicians, to which he could turn to educate himself about his children’s needs. These experiences formed part of the foundation for his development of this web site. Another motivation for the site came from parents of his patients.
Though Dr. Satterwhite is a frequent speaker to parent groups, the busy lives of parents in the 21st century often don’t allow them the opportunity to attend talks in person. It was comments such as, “I wish my husband could have been here to hear that,” that led him to create first audio CDs of his talks, then these podcasts. Moreover, he also wanted a site where parents could share valuable information about their own experiences with having a critically ill child in the hospital or a child with special needs. Few things are more powerful and helpful than hearing from a parent who has walked down a path you are now going down yourself with one of your children. Dr. Satterwhite knows this personally as well, because he has walked down such a path with one of his own children and, despite his medical degree, he needed the help and support of other similarly situated parents.
Dr. Satterwhite aquired his expertise from his medical training, his work with patients and families, and his experiences as a father of four children. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College and a graduate of UNC School of Law. He practiced law in Charlotte for five years before hearing the call to go to medical school. He entered Wake Forest University School of Medicine at age 31 with three small children, the oldest of which was five years old at the time. After medical school, he did his pediatric training at WFU/Baptist Hospital and had a fourth child along the way! In 2000, Dr. Satterwhite completed his pediatric training and began private practice. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Like many other well-known speakers, Dr. Satterwhite participates in community boards, church activities, and has even published several professional articles. However, as nice as these are, what matters most is that he is a loving husband and father, and a pediatrician who is passionate about giving valuable, practical and helpful advice to parents.
